Which Newspaper is Best for UPSC by Toppers?

There are a lot of newspapers out in the market, so choosing the right one would be a really tough choice. I have tried a few newspapers like “THE HINDU“, “INDIAN EXPRESS”, “HINDUSTAN TIMES” and “ECONOMIC TIMES”. Before deciding which is the best newspaper for UPSC, There is a common saying among the UPSC toppers that is:

DO NOT TRY TO READ EVERY SINGLE NEWSPAPER IN THE MARKET FOR UPSC, CHOOSE ONE AND STICK WITH IT.

I have seen a lot of interviews of the toppers and the first advice they give is to always make sure to stick with a single newspaper. Don’t try to spend more time on current affairs and learn to read newspapers efficiently.

The most common Newspaper choice among the toppers for UPSC preparation is THE HINDU and the INDIAN EXPRESS.

So which is the most preferred newspaper among the two? Let’s answer that question too.

which newspaper is best for UPSC Hindu or Indian Express?

I would say both the newspapers are best options, both are prominent newspapers in INDIA and are the best options for current affairs. Hindu is well known for its unbiased ways of delivering the news and Indian Express is well known for its journalistic viewpoint.

Choosing the best option from these would be a really tough challenge but we can decide it with certain criteria;

In my personal experience and from the interviews of various toppers “THE HINDU ” is the most preferred choice for current affairs in UPSC preparation.

Why is The HINDU a better option for UPSC preparation?

  • The HINDU is a well-renowned newspaper brand since 1878.
  • It has been the first choice for various UPSC aspirants and toppers.
  • THE HINDU even has a specialized yearly plan exclusively for UPSC aspirants.
  • The HINDU is well known for its unbiased way of conveying news.

How many newspapers should I read for UPSC?

Well, the answer is simple you must stick to a single newspaper for your preparation. You can’t end up wasting 3-4 hours every day just on current affairs by reading multiple newspapers. My suggestion would be to stick with 1 newspaper for your prelims and increase the number for your mains and interview preparations if required.

Can I skip newspaper for UPSC?

My direct answer would be NO! You should never skip the newspaper for UPSC preparation. UPSC preparation not only relies on your books. Current affairs play a major role in the UPSC examination because of this you must have the habit of reading newspapers daily.

Is newspaper sufficient for UPSC?

Newspaper reading is sufficient to keep you updated on current affairs regularly. But to answer the question precisely I would say the newspaper is a part of your UPSC preparation so we can’t say they reading newspaper alone is sufficient for UPSC.

Is E-newspaper a better option?

I would say yes it is definitely a better option. You can’t copy, paste, or download the required article from a traditional newspaper. E-newspapers provide you with this feature and also you get multiple publications of the newspaper from different locations through e-newspapers.

Just like THE HINDU UPSC ANNUAL subscription where you get multiple papers from all locations.
